Official project updates

v1.0.0 for several libraries

A whole chunk of libraries have been bumped to v1.0.0 and I'm guessing at the motivation but essentially I think it is just to signal that they are well-working rarely changing things and should probably not be mistaken for something incomplete. The show notes state that nothing changed except the version number. Maybe it was maturity, maybe it was compliance. I don't actually know. I'll call it a celebration of stability :)

  • uboot_env, v1.0.0
  • beam_notify, v1.0.0
  • circuits_gpio, v1.0.0
  • circuits_spi, v1.0.0
  • circuits_i2c, v1.0.0
  • nerves_heart, v1.0.0

Nerves Livebook

Another chunk of cool updates to nerves_livebook which is probably the best way to get started with Nerves right now.

v0.2.27

  • System updates to Erlang 24.1.2 and Buildroot 2021.08.1, updates to Livebook (including dynamic favicon)

v0.3.0

  • Update Livebook to 0.3.0
  • Include ExUnit to support livebooks with tests

v0.3.1

  • Update Livebook to 0.3.1 (see release notes here)

Other parts

nerves_motd, v0.1.4
Improvements to logo rendering on touch screen.

nerves_system_br, v1.17.2
Update nerves_heart to v1.0.0

qmi, v0.8.2
Matt Ludwigs and the QMI work was not in the last newsletter so here we have some basic parsing of the NAS operator name indication.

nerves_runtime, v0.11.8
Update mix dependencies to allow using uboot_env v1.0.0

Community updates

Scenic v0.11 now in Beta
So Boyd Multerer of Kry10 is working hard on the 0.11 version of Scenic. If you want to try the beta there is a new generator for it:

mix archive.install hex scenic_new 0.11.0-beta.0

A NervesConf Report

by Todd Resudek

Todd brings us a very nice rundown of the event from the view of the organizer, much appreciated, go read it. In his own words:

NervesConf was a 1-day event, featuring 7 speakers as well as Nerves training. The initial NervesConf was supposed to be held last November, but due to lockdowns was canceled. This summer I asked the original organizers if they intended to hold NervesConf in 2021. They didnt, but offered me their resources if I wanted to organize the event.

NervesConf was sponsored by SmartRent, Very, and Binary Noggin. Without their financial support, it would not have been possible.

ElixirConf videos are arriving

So ElixirConf has started releasing videos from the 2021 event. I'll pick out some that are either Nerves-related directly or that I believe are especially relevant for Nerves:

  • Jason Axelsson - My Scenic Companion
  • Frank Hunleth - Embedded Elixir with Nerves Livebook
  • Isaac Yonemoto - Zig <3 Elixir
  • Matt Ludwigs - Metrics in the Small - Telemetry for Nerves Devices
  • Kentaro Kuribayashi - Pratipad: Bidirectional Data Flow in IoT Systems with Elixir

Supporting the Nerves project

We want to encourage everyone to contribute in whatever way works for them. Here are some ways we currently recommend:

  • Write or port a new hardware library and include it in the Elixir Circuits collection.
  • Give money to the project via Open Collective.
  • Get in touch about taking over maintenance duties for some libraries, we might be able to provide you hardware.
  • Apply for an EEF stipend on something Nerves-related and build it. We can help if you have questions about this.
  • Send corrections or improvements for documentation wherever it fails to help you.
  • Write about Nerves, give talks about Nerves. Make videos about Nerves. It is all good.

Finally, if you have questions about the newsletter or want to suggest something you can simply respond to this email it will go directly to me, Lars, who edits this thing. Let me know what you think.
